Review all key terms and names (vocabulary), re-read the lesson, and review your notes. Notes are posted on Moodle in the folder for Chapter 1. We will also review this material in class. Finally, look at Classzone and review material there (lesson review notes and the flipcards).
Are you ready?
30 JanStudents,
The Grade 6 Humanities team needs to remind you to come prepared for class. It’s nearly February and we’ve seen an increase in students who are forgetting materials in their locker or another classroom. It’s your responsibility to come to class prepared! That means having your computer charged, your homework complete, and bringing your book to read, your planner and other materials you regularly use in class. We will no longer be allowing students to leave during class to get things they forget. Come on, it’s the second semester!

Hello/Goodbye – January
22 JanGrade 6 will soon be say goodbye to two awesome students, Enzo and Jina whose last day will be on Friday. Enzo is returning to Australia after three years at AISC and Jina is returning to S. Korea, after four years here. Both students are kind, hard-working, and positive. We will miss you, Enzo and Jina!
In other class news, Mr. Seth Hills, a M.S. Intern at AISC, is joining Mr. Martin and Ms. Jaya for the second semester. Mr. Seth is from Washington State in the U.S.A. and has been an intern in Grade 8 and Grade 7 Humanities last year and this year, respectively. If you have a question for Mr. Seth, please feel free to post a question and ask him.
Dear Jina, (울 진아씨께)
네가 우리 학교 떠난다니 아쉽다 ㅠ.. You were so kind and had been a helpful friend to me. 어떨 땐 엉뚱함으로 웃음을 자아내기도 했지^^ Jina, you did more to me than I did to you, so I’m very unhappy to send you away to Korea. I believe you will be a perfect student who works really hard and always get 100% on your middle and final exams. 나한테 너무나도 소중한 친구였고, 항상 나한테 잘해줘서 고마워. I’ll never forget you. Good luck in Korea, and farewell! 적응 잘 할끼야! 잘 가그라~

Dear Enzo,
I’m going to miss you so much! It’s just like Irman, you know. It’s as if a part of my soul will be taken with you. I haven’t known you as much as some of your other friends, but you’ve been a great friend for me all the way. Hope you’ll stay in touch!
Your friend, Prahalad
Post a comment and make sure you exchange contact information with Enzo and Jina.

Happy Holidays!
13 DecHappy Holidays from your humanities teachers – Mrs. Hall, Mr. Martin, and Ms. Jaya. We hope you had a fun day today and that you have a restful holiday, whether you are staying in Chennai or traveling. You have worked very hard this first semester, and we are proud of your efforts and smooth transition to the Middle School. It’s hard to believe that half of the school year is over. We are excited about our upcoming units and Week without Walls. Take care and see you soon. Remember to post a comment and say goodbye to the students leaving and, if you want, share your plans for the winter break. See you next year! :>)
Hello/Goodbye & Winter Vacation
11 DecMrs. Hall, Ms. Jaya and Mr. Martin welcome Yoo Hyung to AISC. We are also sad to say goodbye to Emilie, So Hyun, and Ji Soo, who are leaving AISC this month. We wish you all the best of luck! Keep in touch with your friends here. Two more days until our three week winter vacation! It’s hard to believe our first semester is nearly finished and that we are done with half of the year. Post a comment and welcome Yoo Hyung, or say goodbye to a friend. Also, tell us what you plan to do during the vacation, whether you are staying in Chennai, traveling in India, or another country.
Rising Seas – If All the Ice Melted (NG)
5 Nov
Check out this really cool map from National Geographic entitled Rising Seas – If all the Ice Melted. The maps here show the world as it is now, with only one difference: All the ice on land has melted and drained into the sea, raising it 216 feet and creating new shorelines for our continents and inland seas. Click on the maps from different regions of the world to see what it might look like in 5,000 years. Hmmm….where is Chennai?
Welcome back, birthdays, and goodbyes
4 NovWelcome back from your fall vacation! It sounds like many of you took some nice trips or enjoyed your time in Chennai. November birthdays: Chanyu (11/3), Domenic (11/5), Hayato and Vanessa (11/6), Jeong Hee (11/8), Ramu (11/18), Yoojin (11/22), Harin and Emma (11/26). If we forgot someone, let us know. Happy birthday, and have a great day. Md. Irman, who has studied at AISC for three years, is leaving Chennai. His last day is Friday. Make sure you say goodbye. Post a birthday wish, a goodbye to Irman, or tell us more about your vacation in the comment section, if you wish. Have a great week!
Blogging in Humanities
23 SepMrs. Hall’s students joined forces with Mr. Martin’s class today to learn more about the Grade 6 Humanities Blog (formerly Mr. Martin’s Humanities Page) and how we can use it as a resource in our class. We discussed the purpose of the blog, how to follow the blog, how to post a comment and what is a good comment. There are many ways we can use the blog, and sharing ideas and opinions is just a start. Expectations for how we use it will grow over the course of the year. Click HERE to learn more about how to post a blog comment and what an appropriate comment looks like. AISC parents have kindly helped me to translate it into Korean, Japanese, and French, which represent three of our largest groups of students and English language learners. Click on the Google Doc link from this link, if you want to read it in one of these languages.

More Dots!
13 SepIt has been a busy week with MAP Testing the past three days. We will get back on track with classes on Monday. If you have any good photos from DOT Day, let me know or email them to me. Grade 6 has always shown the most school spirit on days like these. Come on, Grade 6!
Upcoming Quizzes (Chapter 1)
3 SepStudents,
There will be two short quizzes on our final lessons from chapter 1. Due to MAP Testing next week, we will not have a lengthier chapter test; instead, we will finish the last two lessons and have quizzes.
Thursday, September 5: Chapter 1, lesson 3 – How Archaeologists Study the Past
Tuesday, September 10: Chapter 1, Lesson 4 – How Historians Study the Past
Review all key terms and names (vocabulary), re-read the lesson, and review your notes. Notes are posted on Moodle in the folder for Chapter 1. We will also review this material in class. Finally, look at Classzone and review material there (lesson review notes and the flipcards).
Quiz – Chapter 1, lessons 1/2
26 AugStudents, You will have your first Social Studies quiz on Wednesday, August 28th. The quiz will be on chapter 1, lessons 1 and 2. You should re-read both lessons, study your notes, and review these terms: pangaea, Continental Drift Theory, geography, continent, landform, climate, vegetation, hemisphere, political map, physical map, thematic map. The three essential questions in each lesson are very good too. Use the Classzone website (Lesson Review) to prepare for all quizzes and tests this year. Good luck!
Ostrich-Egg Globe May Be Oldest to Depict New World
22 AugI saw this Interesting article on the History Channel website. According to the article, “Ostrich-Egg Globe May Be Oldest to Depict New World,” researchers believe the globe is dated 1504, and it’s the oldest yet to identify the New World (the Americas). The article states: “Thomas Sander, editor of the Portolan, points out that the egg might have been made for an Italian noble family around the time of famed artist Leonardo da Vinci, when the nobility often kept ostriches in their back gardens as one more sign of their wealth.” Finally, the Latin phrase Hic Sunt Dracones, translated as “Here be dragons” appears on the globe above the coast of Southeast Asia. I thought this was a great article, especially since we are learning about maps and how maps have changed over time. Click on the link to read the entire article.

BYOT @ AISC
21 AugGrade 6 students learned a lot this week in the Bring your own technology (BYOT) Boot Camp. Students reflected on what they learned today in class, and we also learned how to post a comment on the Humanities Page blog. Please use this site, along with the Moodle site, as an extension of the class and textbook. There are many links, and I will always be updating this site and sharing work we do in class. If you find interesting news articles related to what we are learning in class, please email them to me at: mrobert@aisch.org. If it’s suitable, I will share it on the blog. Have a great day! Mr. Martin
Gorgeous Glimpses of Calamity
