Why is Otzi’s discovery so important to archaeology and the world?
You can learn more about Otzi and the artifacts they found with his body by viewing the link of the museum where he now resides:

This is important because they found out lots of thing with it, and it’s the oldest mummy they found. They can discover so many things from it.

Otzi was frozen to death and also killed faster by the cold. But where did he live and where did his killer’s live. Since he was on foot and apparently in a rush he couldn’t have got far, so maybe somewhere around the mountain Otzi’s settlement might be found. And maybe Otzi’s enemies settlement might be found. But the way Otzi died might have been a secret kill because of the arrow taken out, maybe to tell people he died of the cold, not an arrow.. So Otzi didn’t know he was in danger and then when he found out, he took off and by mistake took the un-prepared arrows and went into the alps, but his killer followed him and killed him where he is now.

Prannoy, this is a good comment and you bring up some good questions. I wonder what else is up there in those mountains. We may never know, unless another warm summer leaves us more clues. I remember I was a senior in college when this story broke (1991). It was really exciting news and since then, they keep finding new information about Otzi.

Otzi is really important to the world of archaeology. Why? Well because he holds many clues to the ancient stone age. He carried many tools with him such as a copper axe, a bag, unfinished arrows, and many more. This told us what tools early humans used to help themselves in daily life. A copper axe, according to archaeologists, is really unusual because they used stone tools and not tools made of metal. Another mystery is why he carried arrows that were unfinished and this question I don’t know the answer too, and think is still a mystery.

Aditya,
This is a deep connection to what you have learned. The website for the museum where he is now has some really, really cool artifacts of things they found with his body. Check it out (it’s listed on the right under Tools for History and Early Humans.

Why is Otzi an important discovery? Well, he uncovered information about how early humans used to live, hunt and eat. For example they found arrows, copper axes and wheat on him. When people found the ice man copper axe it made them rethink about everything they knew about early humans. They thought that early humans used this about 2,000 years ago but his axe was around 3,000 years old.

Otzi was really important because he had all the tools and weapons and clothes on him. Plus, he was in freezing ice so his teeth and nails and even eye balls were still there! What I am interested most in about him is that archaeologist found things that weapons and tools for example axes, arrows and bows were used about 2,000 years ago. However, we discovered that he actually had weapons and tools that were around 3,000 years old. I think that is really cool because they were smart enough to create weapons and tools. Another thing I am interested is that his axe was made of iron (or metal). That means they knew how to create a fire that is around 1500 degree C. I hope I can learn more about him like how did he exactly died?

Futa,
This is a very strong comment. I also think his tools and the artifacts they found were also really interesting…maybe more interesting that his body itself. His axe was actually made of copper I believe. Go back and check on the Ice Man Museum website to confirm. The documentary in class will help us learn more about this discovery.

I think he died from the cold weather because if another person shot him with an arrow, they might have have taken his weapons and meals.

The ice man is very weird. What if he was killed and people put him there for a reason?

Ben,
That’s a very interesting comment. What makes you think that he is weird? We will learn more about the mystery of his death, but I am sure we won’t be able to answer all of the questions surrounding his death? Tell me your hypothesis, or ideas about how you think he died.

Otzi is really important to our history. I think we are lucky that otzi died in a place where he was not moved away by the glaciers. Also we can know which tools and which foods, animals . Clothing and how ice and snow preserved the mummies naturally.

I think that life was very hard because there was not good medicine and because he was old when he was 40 years old.
