April Birthdays, Vacation, & More!

Here’s the last message before our vacation. Have a safe and restful vacation, whether you are staying in Chennai or traveling.  Here is the list of students celebrating birthdays in April: Tarun (4/2), Min Jeong (4/11), Yeji (4/15), Pranav (4/23), Prahalad (4/28), and Arunveer (4/29). Happy birthday. Hinduism and Buddhism

Here is a video playlist with a few video clips and one documentary about the life of Siddhartha Gautama, the prince who later became known as the Buddha, or the enlightened one. They are optional, of course, but you might find them a good review of the things we have learned. We are sure you will learn many new things about Hinduism and Buddhism though.  Post a comment, if you learned sometime particularly interesting that you would like to share with your classmates.  If you ever find good videos, please share them with your teachers and we can add them to the blog, if we feel they are good.

South Korean educators no longer have to compete with smartphones for a student’s attention. What do educators in the world’s most wired country do when students just can’t put down their phones in class? India Chapter Test!

serial-test-takeStudents,  You will have a test on ancient India (Chapter 7: lessons 1 – 4) on Friday, March 28th. With one week to prepare, you can review your material a number of ways:
1) Notes on Moodle, 2) videos and links on the class blog, 3) Classzone Review (Flipcards, practice quiz, etc.), 4) your notes from your notebook, and 5) Re-read chapter 7. Use your time wisely and prepare ahead of time. We will complete the chapter by Tuesday and review on Wednesday. There will be four parts on this test: 14 multiple-choice, 2 short answer, 5 map questions, and an essay (see questions below).
Essay Question – Here are two questions you can prepare for…ONE of them will be on the test:
1) Compare and contrast Hinduism and Buddhism and explain how they have influenced the world outside India today.
2) Compare and contrast the Maurya and Gupta empires, and describe how each empire shaped ancient India.

The Grade 6 Humanities team would like to welcome a new student to AISC, Nicole.  Please help her out and show her around. We are sad to say goodbye to four students who are leaving either tomorrow or next week  – Nagisa, Nao, Hayato, and Ayumu – who will all return to Japan.  Take some time and post a comment welcoming Nicole and saying goodbye and good luck to our four Japanese students.  Best of luck guys! The Grade 6 Humanities team is excited to launch our new book review blogs. This will be an opportunity for you to post reviews and rate books you are reading.  You will reach a wider audience with these reviews and also have opportunities to connect with students who love the types of books you enjoy. You can also create book trailers or use tech tools to promote your book. Good readers create mental images before, during, and after reading, and they make connections to what they are reading through their senses. In class this week, we are reviewing this active reading strategy, and you will use it when writing your extended response due on Friday. Please see the Google Presentation we showed in class.

4,000 Year Old Indus Valley Seal Discovered

A seal and a weight were unearthed at a Harappan-period site in northwestern India. “The seal consists of two Harappan characters, with a typical unicorn as the motif and a pipal leaf depicted in front of an animal. Another example of one can be found in your textbook on page 221 and described on page 222.

 

Geography of India

In our first lesson is chapter 7 , we learned about the geography of India – the Ganges and Indus Rivers, mountain ranges like the Hindu Kush and the Himalayas, and much more. This video playlist has some nice short video clips that are a good review of the content we learned. More videos will be added. New Month, New Unit – Incredible India

This week we began our new unit, Ancient Asia. We begin with India and then learn about China.  I am sure many of you have seen this TV ad, “Incredible India.” If you haven’t, watch it! India is an incredibly diverse country. We know many of you travel outside of India, or return home for vacations. We are curious about the places you have traveled to in India.
