Happy Holidays from your humanities teachers – Mrs. Hall, Mr. Martin, and Ms. Jaya. We hope you had a fun day today and that you have a restful holiday, whether you are staying in Chennai or traveling. You have worked very hard this first semester, and we are proud of your efforts and smooth transition to the Middle School. It’s hard to believe that half of the school year is over. We are excited about our upcoming units and Week without Walls.  Take care and see you soon. Remember to post a comment and say goodbye to the students leaving and, if you want, share your plans for the winter break. See you next year! :>)

Mrs. Hall, Ms. Jaya and Mr. Martin welcome Yoo Hyung to AISC. We are also sad to say goodbye to Emilie, So Hyun, and Ji Soo, who are leaving AISC this month.  We wish you all the best of luck!  Keep in touch with your friends here. Two more days until our three week winter vacation!  It’s hard to believe our first semester is nearly finished and that we are done with half of the year. Post a comment and welcome Yoo Hyung, or say goodbye to a friend.  Also, tell us what you plan to do during the vacation, whether you are staying in Chennai, traveling in India, or another country.

Nelson Mandela – Rest in Peace (R.I.P.)

Nelson Mandela died yesterday at 95 years of age. Watch the CNN Student News video to learn more about the life, legacy and accomplishments of this Nobel Peace Prize winner. Nelson Mandela was the former South African president and anti-apartheid icon. Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC) party in the 1940s and would go on to lead protests against the ruling apartheid regime, which restricted the basic rights of South Africa’s nonwhite population and barred their participation in government. His resistance to such oppressive policies earned him nearly three decades in prison, during which he became an international symbol of the anti-apartheid movement. Upon his release in 1990, Mandela helped negotiate an end to the apartheid system, and four years later he won election as the first black president of South Africa. He retired from politics in 1999, but remained a global advocate for peace and social justice. Click here is to see a timeline of his life.
Here is another video and news story from the History Channel. Mandela inspired countless individuals. Here is a link to some of his most famous quotes and a few here:
“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
“Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies.”

Map Skills and Terms: Scale, Latitude and Longitude, etc.

4 Dec

These terms might be a review for some of you, but the links and videos are helpful. We will continue to focus on map skills throughout the year.  The place where a river enters a lake, larger river, or the ocean is called its mouth. River mouths are places of much activity. The scale on a map can be used to figure out the distance between two locations on a map. Map terms can be found on page 16 in your textbook.

We will wrap up the unit on Mesopotamia this week and discuss the Assyrians. Next week on Wednesday (12/11), you will have your final unit test for Mesopotamia.  A study guide is in the Mesopotamia unit folder on Moodle. Take a look at this website to learn more about warfare in Mesopotamia. Read the story about the Siege of Lachish and then look at the “Explore” and “Challenge” links, which are very interesting.  If you are looking for more sites related to Mesopotamia, check out these links:
